The Role of Splitting Phenomenon under Fracture of Low-Carbon Microalloyed X80 Pipeline Steels during Multiple Charpy Impact Tests

The ambiguity of the splitting effect on X80 low-carbon microalloyed pipeline steels’ tendency towards brittle fracture prompted an experimental study impact toughness scattering based multiple Charpy tests in a temperature range from 20 °C to −100 °C. A fractographic analysis large number fractured samples was carried out. relationships between toughness, deformability and characteristics were studied. common features three steel fractures revealed. It experimentally established that reason for values during completely ductile specimens, as well accompanied by formation, is local inhomogeneity plastic properties. higher susceptibility formation splits particular steel, lower toughness. Using electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) technique, uneven distribution plasticity zone impact-fractured specimens established. comparative with equal at different test temperatures makes it possible identify mechanism negative influence compensation increased certain specimen.
